NATIONAL JUNIOR LEAGUE 2010/11
The first round of National Junior League matches, London North Region,
was held at the Ellenborough Club,
Fourteen teams (I understand that 24 teams originally applied to take
part) were divided into two Divisions of seven, teams playing nine sets
for each match and, differing from previous seasons, each match was
played on one table. The
Problems started a couple of days before the match with Matthew Davis
dropping out from the A Team and despite telephone calls I was unable to
find a replacement at such short notice. With five players registered
for the B Team then one of them could play up for the A Team for each
match in this round of matches giving time to seek a replacement for the
next round on 27 November. That plan failed with both Sarah Austin and
Oliver Hicks ill. The partial salvation was that with each match being
played on one table each of the remaining three B Team players could not
only play for their own team they could also play for the A Team at the
same time.
The A Team’s first match was against Watford Jets a, a new team that had
not previously played in the London North Region. Robert Shrimpton and
James Austin opened up a 2-0 lead, Robert scraping through 12 and 9 in
the third and fourth games of his match against Ishan Bairoliya. Chris
Denyer, having won his first match for the B Team, took the first game
to 11 against James Smith and unlucky not to take his match to a fifth
game losing 16-14 in the fourth. James then lost to Ishan 9 in the fifth
but Robert, Chris and James then put the A team 5-2 up with consecutive
wins over James Smith, Jordan Olney and James Smith , Chris this time
winning his match to 13 in the fourth game. Robert wrapped up a 6-3 win
with a three straight win over
For the next match against BATTS Emily Knight was the B Team player to
play in both matches. With Emily chipping in a 3-0 win over James
Knudsen the A team were quickly 4-0 up and when in the next match Emily
took the second game over Liam Williams 14-12
after being 10-6 down it appeared to all that Liam was being read
the riot act by coach Aad Kwakkel. It did the trick but with Emily still
playing well lost only at 11-9 in the fourth.
A quick 1, 7, 0 win for James over namesake James and Emily was
back on the table, this time against Ethan Walsh and what a cracking
match, particularly the third game which Emily won 17-15 to put herself
2-1 up. Alas she couldn’t keep the momentum going losing 8 in the fifth.
James’s last match -9, 7, 10, 9 win over Liam gave the A Team a 7-2 win.
Their last match of the day was against a two man Three E’s team with
Rebecca Denyer playing up. Robert a quick opening 3-0 over Aaron Facey
and then James 2-0 up against Jamie Merrison, albeit 18-16 in the
second, then seemed to lose his way so it went to a fifth game and 10-8
up was finally lost 14-12.
With James winning against Aaron easily 3-0 and two concessions the A
Team were 4-1 up. Rebecca took three games to get going in her first
match on the table, playing really well in that game before losing to 8
to Jamie. Winning a game 11-0 Robert is still wondering how he lost his
match against Jamie. In what was a close match he lost -11, 10, -0, 6,
10. In the final match after a poor first game Rebecca again played well
in the next two against Aaron but struggling against the Aaron serve
being unable to covert five game points in the loss of the third game
16-14. Final score 5-4
It appears that Division 2 this season is much stronger than in the past
two seasons. The B Team started their opening fixture of the day with a
3-0 win for Chris Denyer over Anthony Chu. After that, neither Chris,
Emily Knight or Rebecca Denyer could add to the
Against Ellenborough D the opening three matches were all won 3-0, Chris
his against Jamal Grant but Emily and Rebecca losing theirs to Charlie
Charalambous (18-16 in the first!) and Anard Gasiorowsk respectively.
Chris also won both his other matches in four. Emily lost her second in
three 9’s to Anard and won the last in four over Jamal. Meantime Rebecca
had lost her other two matches having no luck at the end of the fourth
game against Charlie.
In the final match against Ellenborough C, Chris won his three matches
against Keiran Burton, Armagan Huseyin and Mina Bui. Rebecca came
closest to adding another point to the
The A Team’s current occupation of top spot in the Division could be due
to the luck in playing the bottom three teams. Their continued
occupation of that spot will depend on who plays in the number three
position for the next three days of play should their be no promotion or
relegation after the next round of matches.
Service and return of service seems to be the main items that the B Team
players need to concentrate on in the short time before the next round
of matches.
The second round of matches is on Saturday 27 November 2010 when there
will be four rounds of matches to play, each match to be played on two
tables. Both
