NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE 18 OCTOBER 2010

The first round of National Cadet League matches was held at Stowupland on Sunday 10 October 2010, Sundays being the scheduled dates in the ETTA Calendar.

Twelve teams were again entered this season thus keeping two divisions of six teams. The format of both divisions was matches of nine games so that the players of each team played one another in their Division matches. That was the theory with the three matches of each Division played on four tables. This season the Eastern Region Junior Division was also played in the same hall. Chelmsford had a team in Division1 and two thirds of a team in Division 2.

At the Essex Junior Trials it was known that eleven teams had entered and Paul Davison approached me to discuss whether we could raise a joint team between us and thus have two divisions of six teams. I did not know that this discussion had led to a team until the fixture format was circulated last Wednesday. Until arrival at Stowupland I did not know that one team had withdrawn last Thursday because their entered players were no longer cadets. With three teams turning up short and some organisers finding that day licences were much more expensive this year the format of how the matches would be played on the four tables had to be changed, in the event for the better and it made for a finish on time in relation to Peter’s original format.

In their first match the Chelmsford A team played NETTS A who were expected to be one of the front runners, having acquired the services of Rowhedge’s Jane Li. Chris Denyer and Oliver Hicks both beat NETT’s number three Joe Nourse 3-0. Sarah Austin, having earlier had an excellent, but nail biting, 5, -7, 6, -8, 10 win over Patrick Gilbert, somehow contrived a 3-0 loss to Joe. Jane beat both Chris and Sarah 3-0 but had to come from 2-1 down to squeeze past Oliver. A 6-3 loss the final result.

Their second match was against a two player Rowhedge team. Five easy 3-0 wins over Lajos Zisky and Ben Jackson but how did Sarah lose 3-1 against Lajos after winning the first set 11-2? An 8-1 win the result.

The last match was against Bury St. Edmunds, another team with only two players. A curious scorecard.! The first two matches by Chris and Sarah against Callum Wilkinson and Harvey Dinkle were won 3-0, the second two by Sarah and Oliver 3-1 and the final two both went to five sets, Oliver overcoming Callum 5,-9,11,-10,8 whilst Chris lost to Harvey 9, -7, 6, -7, -6. 8-1 the final result.

The combined Chelmsford/NETTS team found that they were the ones to sit out the first match. When they got on the table to play Wymondham B there was never more than one game in it from start to finish. Martin lost the first 3-0 to Oliver Thompson but Wiktor went the full five sets with Chris Knights after leading 2-0 he finally won 7, 11, -5, -17, 8. Jack Gooden was the NETTS player in this combined team but he lost all three in this match. Wiktor went on to beat Oliver 11-3 in the fifth and Alex Davey three straight. Martin also beat Alex (3-1) but with the match score at 4-4 then lost to Chris.

In their last match against Framlingham Tigers another 5-4 result but this time in their favour with Jack’s win the decider. Martin started with a last gasp, he hadn’t moved a lot to have run out of breath, -6, 8, 7, -7, 11 over Rheianna Evans. Natalie Wills beat Wiktor 3-0 but Jack put the team 2-1 up with his only win of the day, a close 12, 8, -8, 9 effort over Oliver Lamb and Martin extended the lead with a 3-1 win over Natalie. Wiktor beat Oliver 3-0 and Martin ensured the team win when beating Oliver in the penultimate game. Final score 5-4.

The next round of matches will be on Sunday 12 December at Stowupland.
