Greg Green impresses for Hatfield Peverel A

With a paucity of first division matches so far this Season in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League it was Maldon B who impressed this week. They beat Hatfield Peverel A 7-3, producing a good team effort with new signing Alex Abbott, Hamish Innes and Paul Stephens all winning twice. In what was arguably the pick of the action fast-improving 2010 Clacton Mens Singles Champion Greg Green (who also won twice) made his mark by defeating Alex Abbott 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7.

Relegated Chelmsford A (the League’s “yo-yo” team) will be hoping to bounce back to the top division at the first attempt and few will be surprised if they are successful. With Bradley Hudgell, Waseem Qureshi and Peter Barrett all winning twice they beat OCs A 7-3. Robert Burton was the best of the OCs players and he scored two good wins over both Waseem Qureshi and Peter Barrett.
The inform Trevor Carter led the way as Writtle beat Hatfield Peverel C 7-3 with excellent victories over Steve Buer, Peter Mynard and Clive Allenby. The match between Chelmsford C and Chelmsford B looked to be heading in Chelmsford C’s direction as they raced into a 5-2 lead. But, Chelmsfird B hit back……and hard. Robert Shrimpton picked up his second win by beating Duncan Elloy 11-3, 5- 11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 and Alastair Piper got the better of Mike Johnston 13-11, 11-7, 12-14, 11-8. Julie Vansertima sealed the draw by defeating Ryan Pitt 7- 11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9 in a tense last game to level the scores. Promoted Hylands A acquitted themselves well against ECC B. Brandon Crouchman scored a hat-trick in another drawn game. Crouchman beat Gary Brignall 11-8, 11-2, 6-11, 11-6 in the all-important last game.

Excalibur / Elmtree Graphics C were the week’s big winners in division three.
Father and son duo Phil and Mark Smith were both undefeated as they beat OCs B 9-1. Excalibur / Elmtree Graphics B also won convincingly, seeing off Bocking B 8-2. George Pavitt won his three singles and he received excellent support from Lin Attridge and Bill Smith who both won twice. ECC D had James Hicks to thank as they beat Danbury D 7-3. He won his three singles in fine style and on this showing looks a little strong for this division.

Danbury G had Graham Briggs to thank as they beat Writtle C 7-3 in division four. Andy Fox provided his toughest test and it was only in the fifth end that Briggs pulled away. He ran out a 9-11, 12-10, 8-11, 13-11, 11-4 winner.
The match between Elmtree / Excalibur D and ECC E was closely fought, so much so that no single player remained undefeated. Elmtree’s Tony Vassallo and ECC’s Alan Thompson and John Wickins all won twice as ECC shaded the match 6-4. It was a similar story in the drawn match between Danbury H and Danbury F. No one player dominated and Danbury H’s Dave Goody and Brian Elllis and Danbury F’s Dave Marsh and John Robinson all picked up doubles. Dave Marsh earned Danbury F a share of the points by getting the better of Dave Goody 11-9, 10-12, 11-6, 11- 13, 11-6 in a fluctuating deciding last game.

Elmtree / Excalibur E made no mistake in division five. Steve Cheesman (three wins), Tony Hallett (three wins) and John Marshall (two wins) dominated as they beat OCs D 9-1. Dave Newman, OC’s sole winner had to pull out all the stops to get the better of John Marshall 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 11-9. Hatfield Peverel E (represented by three generations of the Carter family) beat Danbury J 6-4.
Dave and Adam both won their three singles but they inexplicably lost the doubles, missing out 11-6, 9-11, 10-12, 8-11 against Martin and John Knights.

OCs E (Matthew Porter, Tony Cohen and George Mastin) were comfortable 9-1 winners against Chelmsford H in division six. Jack Osbourne was on the mark for Chelmsford H and he beat George Mastin. OCs F also ran out as 9-1 winners. Tom Adam and Farooq Ahmed both won their three singles. Tom Adam was pushed all the way by Keith Pallett and he eventually triumphed 9-11, 11-9, 13-11, 8-11, 11-9. Writtle D had the experienced Anne Lockhart to thank as they beat Hylands B 7- 3. She stayed undefeated and her team-mate Kevin Barber picked up two wins.

OCs G (Fred Martin and George Mastin) beat ECC G 5-0 in the CLICK League whilst Writtle E were also clear-cut winners. Peter Windley and David Meah saw off OCs J 5-0. Peter Windley won a widely fluctuating battle against Wam England 17-15, 11-3, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9. The other matches in this division were closer affairs.
BNCA beat OCs J 8-2. Zach Harrington led the way by picking up two wins. BNCA were also involved in a 3-2 finish against OCs H although this time it went against them. Daniel Berry won both of his singles to give OCs the edge. Chelmsford L did well to overcome Chelmsford M 3-2 as it was the M side’s James Bland who won his two singles. Daniel Moore and James Moore both won once for Chelmsford L and they combined to beat James Bland and Adam Brown 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 4-11, 11-8 in a well contested Doubles encounter.
