Superb win for Nikki Kennard

Old Chelmsfordians A face a real battle to hang onto their first division status in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League, and they won’t be greatly heartened by their recent 7-3 defeat against Rawreth A. Rawreth newcomer Adam Brewer impressed by beating Paul Davison by a quick-fire 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 margin but he was unable to complete his hat-trick. Brewer missed out 12-10, 7-11, 11-4, 12-14, 7-11 against an inspired Nikki Kennard, a candidate for the “Win of the Season” in anyone’s book. Gary Young continues to make his mark for Excalibur A. Young took a superb hat-trick of wins against Maldon A which included a 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Minda Sinkus as Excalibur held the leaders to a draw. Young teamed up successfully with 2010 Colchester Veterans Champion Mike Wright as Excalibur drew with ECC A. Young repeated his victory in the Mens Singles at the M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Tournament over Steve Kerns with a 3-2 success whilst Wright took the scalp of Lucy Wang 3-1.
Maldon A had 2010 Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Neil Charles to thank as they beat Danbury A 6-4. Charles avenged his only defeat in the League this Season by getting the better of Antony Greenwood comfortably 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.

Hatfield Peverel B scored their eighth win of the Season as they beat Danbury B 7-3 in division two. Neil Freeman led the way with an undefeated outing and Martyn Green won twice. The match between Hatfield Peverel A and Hatfield Peverel C finished all square, after Ray Eldridge had remained unbeaten. The improving Peter Mynard beat both John Gagg and John Parodi. ECC B moved up in to fourth place by beating Hatfield Peverel B 6-4. The hard-hitting Simon Webber won his three singles and he completed his full set of wins by fighting back strongly from 2-0 down to get the better of Martyn Green 10-12, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4.

Hylands School A took another step closer to the third division title by beating second-placed Writtle B 6-4, and although they trail Writtle by a point they have two matches in hand on their rivals. Terry Dowsett and Brandon Crouchman both won their three singles although Crouchman had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Trevor Carter 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8. Danbury C who have improved over the course of the Season beat the higher-placed Excalibur B 6-4. Dave Richardson dominated by winning his three singles.

In division four Elmtree Graphics B scored their twelfth win of the Season, a 7-3 victory over Writtle C and they now lead the table by four points.
Father and son duo Phil and Mark Smith were untroubled in winning their six singles.

Second-placed Danbury G had to rely on team-work as they beat Excalibur D
7-3 in division five. Dave Goody, Brian Ellis and Dave Powell all won twice although none of them were able to pressurise an impressive Steve Cheesman.

Old Chelmsfordians G were the week’s big winners in division six, as they brushed aside Writtle D 9-1. Tom Adam and Farooq Ahmed both won their three singles. Old Chelmsfordians E almost emulated their Club colleagues as they beat Excalibur E 8-2. Tony Cohen and Matthew Porter both stayed undefeated. Hylands School B ran out 7-3 winners against Writtle D after Philip Bigland and Jack Crook both picked up three wins. Chelmsford J stay in second place and it was team-work which saw them beat Old Chelmsfordians E 6-4. Robert Shrimpton, Ian Austin and Jacqui Smith all won twice. Ian Austin excelled to get the better of Tony Cohen 7-11, 13-15, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10 whilst the vastly improved Jacqui Smith made her mark as she took the scalp of Matthew Porter 8-11, 11-8 12-10, 1-11, 11-7. Robert Shrimpton fought back bravely in his game against Tony Cohen but victory was to elude him. The experienced Cohen came through to win 11-3, 11-8, 4-11, 12-14, 11-8.
