NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE 31 JANUARY 2010

The third round of National Cadet League matches was held at Stowupland on Sunday 31 January 2010. This round counted as the second round of the three rounds for the final Divisional tables. All matches were played on two tables.

In their first match the Chelmsford A team played Rougham, the team they beat 4-2 last time. However they only had two players as their third player was playing football and would arrive to play in later matches. James Denyer beat both Max Boulter 3-1 and later on William Woods (who did not play last time) 3-0 whilst Jack Crook on his debut this season lost his opening match to William 3-1. Chris Denyer this time lost to Max 8, 5, 10 so with the benefit of the two conceded matches a 4-2 win result the same as last time was achieved.

Against Wensum Jack opened with a 9, -3, 1,7 win over the opposition’s number one Liam Pye whilst James was having an easier win over Jack Cockburn this time. This time Chris just got the better of Finn Brockleby 4, -8, -8, 4, 9 and James put the team 4-0 up with a 3-1 win over Liam. Finn however beat Jack -10, 14, 4, 8 but Chris made the match score 5-1 with a win over Chris. Last time the match ended in a draw.

Bury St. Edmunds were another team we drew with last time. Jack lost his opening match to Rhys Davies 3-0 whilst James beat Jack Anthony much easier than last time and Chris a comfortable 3-0 win over Calum Wilkinson. Then came James’s match with Rhys Davies who had a 100% record in the last round of matches. James won the first two sets 7, 7 but lost the next two sets 6, 8.  James inched his way to a 10-7 lead in the decider but Rhys hit back saving the three match points. With match points to both players James finally won 14-12. Jack put Chelmsford 4-1 up  beating Calum but Chris lost the final match to Jack Anthony after being two sets to one up.

Next came the match against the leaders NETTS A team who they also drew with last time. Five of the six matches were won 3-1. James again beat Patrick Gilbert 3-1 whilst on the other table Luke Tarrant just got the better of Jack. Chris again lost to Ben Page for Chelmsford to go 2-1 down but from then on James had an easier win over Luke than last time, Chris beat Patrick 9, 7, 4 and Jack completed the team win  by beating Ben -6, 9, 6, 6.

The last match was against Wymondham where Jack lost the opening match to Tom Fox but after that it was one way traffic, with all matches won comfortably for a 5-1 win

10 out of 10 for James, 4 out of 9 for Jack and 6 out of 9 for Chris. The Chelmsford team are now two points behind NETTS A and five points ahead of Bury St. Edmunds.

The B Team in Division 2 was again represented by the three girls, Sarah Austin, Rebecca Denyer and Emily Knight. Their first match was against Stowmarket B whose number one player failed to turn up and the result was the same as the previous matches – 6-0. Only Rebecca needed a fourth set to beat Megan Bollen.

Against the improving Rowhedge team four of the six matches went the distance but eventually the match result was the same – 5-1.Sarah beat Ben Jackson (son of Gary) easily but Rebecca had to come from 2-1 down to beat Alice Rudge and Emily managed to take the last three points of her match from 8-8 in the fifth to beat BATTS winner Jane Li. Unexpectedly Sarah found herself two sets all in her match with Alice and then won the fifth set to 2. Emily beat Ben 3-1 Rebecca won the first two sets with Jane 4, 5 but then lost the next three.

Against NETTS B a 6-0 win was again achieved. Rebecca had the toughest match being taken to five sets against their new player Chris Hillman and three of the other matches with Chris and Sam Johnson went to four sets.

Stowmarket A had only two players and in the opening match Rebecca had to come from two sets down to beat Jack Sampson -8, -9, 9, 11, 9. Sarah won her two matches easily and Emily needed four sets to defeat Connor Laird for a 6-0 win.

In the last match versus a two player Framlingham Earl Rebecca has yet to find a way of beating Rhiannon Evans losing again 3-0 but Sarah had no trouble when playing her later winning 0, 1 and 4. Sarah had already beaten Oliver Lamb 3-0 and Emily finished the match with a similar win over Oliver for a 5-1 win.

Sarah 9 out of 9, Rebecca 5 out of 7 and Emily 8 out of 9. Chelmsford B lead the table by 20 points from NETTS B with Rowhedge 2 points further behind.
