NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE 24 JANUARY 2009

The third round of National Cadet League matches was held at Stowupland on Saturday 24 January 2009.

The nine match format for both divisions was changed to a six match format so that each team in each Division would play one another on the day. They would also do so on the final day and the Divisions winners and runners up would be determined over these two days play. Each match was played on two tables and the teams in each Division remained the same as in the two previous rounds.

Chelmsford A’s first match was against Stowmarket A, a team they had previously beaten 7-2 and 5-4 so they were hoping for a good start to the day. With James Austin and Robert Shrimpton both winning their opening matches 3-0 against Ruairidh Penman and Chris Porter respectively they were halfway there. As in the last match Sarah Austin lost to Lucy Zhu in five and James beat Chris 3-0. In her last match Sarah was unable to convert a match point eventually losing to Ruairidh 4, 8, -10, -5, -9 but this time Robert was able to reverse his previous 15-13 defeat in the fifth to Lucy with a 12-10 win in the fifth after saving two match points for a team 4-2 win. Next came Framlingham Earl A and a 5-1 win. Robert lost a 2-1 lead over Tom Fox in his opening match with 8, 8 losses in the last two games but James won both his matches 3-0. Sarah had two very hard fought matches against Jake Rolph and Sam Dismore eventually winning both 11-8 in the fifth, scores of 9, 11, -9, -9, 8 and 9, -7, 10, -7, 8 reflecting the closeness of her matches. Their next match was against Bury St. Edmunds whom they had narrowly beaten last time. James was again unbeaten but with Robert not playing the player he beat last time and Sarah losing to Joe Easdown this time a 4-2 defeat resulted. Chelmsford’s fourth match of the day was against NETTS B(oys), a team they had not yet played this season. James easily beat Ben Page 4, 2, 4 and he will be more than pleased with his 10, -2, 9, 7 win over Luke Tarrent. It looked as though a draw was likely when Sarah led Ben 2-0 but the 15-13 loss of the third game seemed to give Ben new life as he took the next two games 2 and 5, so a 4-2 defeat. Their last match of the day was against runaway leaders Wymondham and the inevitable 6-0 loss resulted although James did his best to try and stem the flow, losing 3-2 to Sam Rock after leading 2-1.

For the B Team it was probably a day they would want to forget with only a draw against the team they beat 9-0 last time to show for their efforts.

They started off with a match against Framlingham Earl B who they had beaten twice previously. Jamie Dowsett started by losing to Vicky Last, who he had beaten on the previous two occasions, 14, 8, -3, 3 whilst Chris Denyer lost to Isaac Rolph, who had not previously played, -5, 6, 12, -7, -6. Rebecca Denyer, who started brightly in both her matches fell away to lose both 3-1 and it was left to Chris to gain the only win with a 9, 9, 6 result over Rhiannon Evans. The next match against Stowmarket C was an improvement, Jamie winning his match with Sam Betts-Davies 9, -4, -7, 8, 9 and Chris his with Max Betts-Davies 2, 3, 10. Earlier Chris had lost to Sam 7 in the fifth. NETTS C was the team they managed a draw with. Jamie managed two 3-1 wins over Joshua Forbes-Brown and Rebecca Lockwood and Chris beat Shauna Harrison 3-0. It looked as though Rebecca might get her first win of the day when playing Shauna in the last match but it all went wrong in the fifth game. Against Stowmarket D, who finished the day in the runners up position, Jamie and Chris lost their matches 3-0 and Rebecca took a game off Aladair Penman. Somehow Jamie then managed to beat Harry Hughes 6, 9, 9 and Chris got a last gasp win over Aladair -12, 5, -7, 5, 9 and a 4-2 defeat the result. The last match against the Division leaders Stowmarket B resulted in a 5-1 defeat, Chris getting the win when he beat Alex Holmes in the opening match 7, -5, 10, -6, 8.and the only other match to go to a fourth game being Rebecca’s with Liam Pinney.

The next round of matches at Stowupland will be on Saturday March 28.
