NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE 20 DECEMBER 2008

The second round of National Cadet League matches was held at Stowupland on Saturday 20 December 2008 with the NETTS and Bury St. Edmunds teams, missing in the first round of matches, in attendance this time.

The nine game match format for both divisions was retained for the days four rounds of matches, each match being played on two tables. Chelmsford had a team in each Division.

With Robert Shrimpton arriving late James and Sarah Austin commenced the A team’s match against Bury St. Edmunds, James having a good 7, 5, 5 win over George Kizis and Sarah the closest of defeats 10, 10, 9 to Will Hall. Robert started his day with the closest of wins over Joe Easdown -10, 8, -5, 10, 10 whilst on the other table after taking the first 14-12 off George, Sarah lost the next three. James beat Joe 3-0 but Robert lost 3-1 to Will for a 3-3 scoreline. Wins by Sarah and James put the A team 5-3 up but Robert lost the last match to George for the narrow win. Their next match was against Stowmarket A who they beat 7-2 back in October with the same players on each side. This time they opened up a 4-1 lead, Sarah losing to Lucy Zhu after winning the two opening games 5, 8. Stowmarket the won the next three matches to make the match score 4-4, Robert losing to Lucy -8, 11, -9, 10, -13 after holding match points. James won the match by beating Ruairidh Penman 2, 11, 3. They next had to play Wymondham whose 100% record had ended when Bury St. Edmunds took a game off them in their previous match. Much as in the October match the Wymondham players were convincing winners but James beat Daniel Dalmay -6, 1, 9, 9 for Chelmsford’s sole win. For their last match Chelmsford faced a two player Framlingham Earl A and finished with the same scoreline as last time, a 7-2 win. The two losses were Sarah’s, the one to Tom Fox being a close 8, -10, 10, -10, -6. Three wins out of four matches being a satisfying days play.

The B team started against Stowmarket C, a team they did not play the first time around. The scorelines of the opening two matches were very similar, Jamie Dowsett losing to Sam Betts-Davis 9, -6, 13, 9 and Chris Denyer losing to William Eden 9, -6, 10, 9. Sister Rebecca opened the Chelmsford scoring with a 4, 6, 4 win against Max Betts-Davis whilst Chris was losing 9, 9, 11 to Sam. Jamie and Chris then both beat Max 3-0 but what could have been a 5-4 win just failed when both Rebecca and Jamie lost 8 in the fith to Sam and William respectively. Their next match was against Stowmarket B, the team they played first in the October round of matches and the match score ended the same as then, 8-1 to Stowmarket. This time it was Chris who beat Liam Pinney for the sole win and Rebecca the closest to achieving another win being 2-0 up against the same player before losing in five. Next were Framlingham Earl B who only had two players last time but with a full team reversed the final score from a 7-2 loss to a 6-3 win. As last time Jamie and Chris won the two opening matches against the same players, Vicky Last and Rhiannon Evans. The one difference this time was that Chris lost 3-0 to Vicky having beaten her 3-1 last time. The player missing last time, Jake Rolph, won his three games all comfortably 3-0. The last match of the day was against NETTS C, who missed the first round of matches and had lost today’s three matches. The Chelmsford trio showed no mercy to their opponents only two matches requiring a fourth game, Rebecca being the player to win all her matches 3-0.

The next round of matches at Stowupland will be on Saturday January 24, a date that clashes with the next round of National Junior League matches at Ellenborough, and the at Stowupland on Saturday 28 March.

Following this round of matches as there is no hope of NETTS or Bury St. Edmunds catching up with the matches missed in the first round a new competition would take place over the last two rounds of matches. There appeared to be no case for promotion or relegation between the Divisions and they would thus remain the same. The format would be changed to a six match format and each team in each Division would play one another on both days.
