NIKKI ON THE MARK FOR
OLD CHELMSFORDIANS
2008 Chelmsford Ladies Champion Nikki Kennard turned in a sparkling performance for OCs A as she won her three singles in her team’s first division match against Excalibur A. Nikki scored three excellent wins against Gary Young, Gary Baker and Nigel Lamb although Excalibur still ran out convincing 7-3 winners. Maldon A had things pretty much their own way as they beat Danbury A 10-0 as Paul Stephens, Paul Sayer and Keiran Lally dominated this match. Ian Whiteside came closest to picking up a game for Danbury pushing Paul Sayer all the way, before succumbing 11-6, 8-11, 7-11, 11-7, 9-11 - a superb effort. ECC A were also on target and they made Elmtree Graphics A pay for turning up a player short. The new-look ECC side of Lucy Wang, Peter Lau and Steve Kerns ran out 8-2 winners. Hatfield Peverel A were this week’s big winners in division two, as they beat Excalibur B 9-1. John Gagg, John Webber and John Parodi took all nine singles and only a last gasp doubles victory for Bill Smith and Lin Attridge against John Gagg and John Parodi by a 1-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 13-11 margin prevented Peverel completing a whitewash. Likely Champions Chelmsford A were again successful and their 7-3 win over Chelmsford C was achieved despite the fact that they were a player short. Bradley Hudgell and Waseem Qureshi were both undefeated. Chelmsford C also tasted success against Danbury B, and they turned in a very strong performance with Ryan Pitt (two wins), Iggy Adams (three wins) and Duncan Elloy (three wins) dominating matters as they ran out 8-2 winners. Chelmsford B were also comfortable winners and they brushed aside Danbury B 8- 2. Adrian Pitt and Julie Vansertima were both undefeated whilst Stevie Pell did well to beat Maurice Hardy and she also came very close to getting the better of Ivan Chaplin before missing out 16-14, 11-9, 9-11, 14-16, 6-11. It was the Green family - Son Greg and Father - Martyn who dominated the match between Hatfield Peverel B and Liberal A as they stayed undefeated in their team’s 7-3 win. In division three, Steve Buers (Hatfield Peverel C) , Trevor Roberts (ECC D) and Gus Heath (ECC C) all impressed by remaining undefeated and leading their teams to victory. Hatfield Peverel C were 7-3 winners against ECC C, ECC D beat Excalibur C 6-4 and ECC C won 7-3 against ECC E. Steve Buers had to work hardest to pick up his trio of wins - surviving by a nail-biting 12-10, 6-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9 game against Russell Forde and an equally tantalising 6-11, 11- 8, 4-11, 11-3, 13-11 victory against Gary Copsey. Likely Division four contenders Bocking B were hard pushed to beat Danbury G 6- 4. Their top player, Richard Jennings won his three singles but John Robinson hit back, winning twice for Danbury. Elsewhere, Danbury E came out on top, beating Danbury F 7-3. Rob Kneale and Ken Sheard both stayed unbeaten although Sheard had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Dave Powell 11-9, 13- 15, 5-11, 11-7, 11-9. Rawreth B returned to winning ways, beating OCs A 7-3, with Mike Worship (three wins), Gordon Swan (two wins) and Stan Owen (two wins) all playing their part in their team’s success. Writtle C impressed in division five as they ran out comprehensive 9-1 winners against Hatfield Peverel E. Andy Fox and Frank Neill both stayed unbeaten and Colin Powell picked up Peverel’s sole wins, a five game victory against Tony Lambert. EPHQ also joined the "9-1 Club", and they had Ian Hockley and Francis Whitbread on top form as they brushed ECC G aside. Mohammed Mohseni picked up the ECC victory, with an opening game win against Wayne Campbell Harvey. Chelmsford F’s Tom Lee was unlucky to be on the losing side when his side lost 6-4 to Chelmsford G as he won his three singles, but Matt Skeoch hit back by winning twice for the E side. Lee just prevailed, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 10-12, 13- 11 in a very hard-fought opening game when he clashed with Skeoch. Chelmsford G fared better against a two-man Danbury J side and they ran out 7-3 winners. James Austin ensured his team stayed on top, beating both Norman Hayes and Tony Reece-Ford. ECC F, who were third in this division last year should be challenging for honours this time round and they had Richard and Malcolm Storey staying unbeaten as they beat Writtle C 7-3. However, this looks to have been a fiercely contested match with the ECC F team winning all four games that were decided in the fifth end. Great Baddow had few problems notching up a 10-0 win in division six, with Jim McCarthy, David Gatherall and Tony Hallett carrying all before them. Hallett was the only Baddow player to come under real pressure and he had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Owen Jordan 7-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9. Leaders Excalibur D won again, beating OCs F 8-2 with Steve Cheesman dominating the match. Charles Eaton won twice for OCs beating both Craig McGarrigle and Keith Fitz-John. Danbury L were convincing winners against Chelmsford J, the three games that Chelmsford picked up coming from concessions, as Graham Briggs and Lee McHugh both remained undefeated. Chelmsford J also tasted success, and they beat Chelmsford K 7-3 with Michael Whelpdale (two wins), Rob Shrimp ton (two wins) and Patrick Wheedle (three wins) all playing a part in the Chelmsford J side‘s victory. Chelmsford M were clear-cut 5-0 winners in the CLICK League against Chelmsford N with Daniel Thomas and Bradley Sullivan carrying all before them whilst Hylands B also ran out 5-0 winners against Chelmsford L. Phil Badland and Jamie Dowsett dominated this match. However, Hylands had to gives second best against Chelmsford M just missing out 3-2. Dan Thomas was the outstanding player on view winning both of his singles. He beat Jamie Dowsett 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 7- 11, 11-9 and Phil Bigland 11-7, 7-11, 11-3, 11-7.
