NATIONAL CADET LEAGUE 11 OCTOBER 2008 The first round of National Cadet League matches was held at Stowupland on Saturday 11 October 2008, clashing with the recently arranged Regional Assessment Trials held at St. Albans. Twelve teams entered this season as against last year’s fourteen teams thus creating two divisions of six teams. However NETTS decided to take their two teams and Bury St. Edmunds their team to St. Albans so the first day of the League went ahead with the nine remaining teams. The format of both divisions was matches of nine games so in the first division the four teams played one another whilst in the second division one team had a bye in each round. Chelmsford had a team in each Division. In their first match the Chelmsford A team went into a quick 4-0 lead against Stowmarket A with James Austin, Robert Shrimpton and Sarah Austin winning their games all three straight. Stowmarket’s number one, Chris Porter then beat Sarah 3-0 whilst Robert’s last two games went the full distance, leading 2-0 in both, he lost the next in both surrendering match points in each and the fourth in both to 9 before claiming the fifth in both at 7 and 9 respectively. Between Robert’s two games Sarah had lost 3-1 to Ruairidh Penman and James had beaten Louis Zhu 9, 2, 9 for the opening 7-2 win. The A Team’s next match was against Wymondham whose players had improved considerably since last season. Not only did Wymondham win 9-0, Sarah coming the closest to winning a game when she lost 8, -9, 11, 11 to Danny Dalmay, Wymondham also won 9-0 in their other two matches. The A Team’s last match of the day was against Framlingham Earl A and they raced into a 5-0 lead but only just as Sarah had to come from 2-1 down to beat Sam Dismore 5, -3, -4, 8, 10 and Robert losing a 2-0 lead to finally defeat number one James Bailey 11, 9, -8, -8, 8. Sarah lost her last two games both in four, whilst James had won his three games 3-0 for a 7-2 win. Three of the four originally selected cadets for the Chelmsford B team withdrew so Chris and Rebecca Denyer from Chelmsford’s Click teams teamed up with Hylands Jamie Dowsett in Division 2. A tough opening match against Stowmarket B ended in an 8-1 defeat, Jamie winning the one -10, 10, -9, 8, 4 against Liam Pinney. A baptism for Chris and Rebecca, Chris taking the last game of the match to four against number one Alex Holmes. However as the day went on things got better for them. Against Framlingham Earl B, a team with only two players, Jamie beat Vicky Last 3-1 whilst Chris then won the next two games, 4, 1, 10 over Rhiannon Evans and 6, 11, -7, 5 over Vicky. Rebecca lost 3-0 to Rhiannon but took a set off Vicky and Jamie won the last played game 3-0 for a team 7-2 win. For their last match against Stowmarket D they were effectively starting off 3-0 down as Rachel West was expected to win her three matches. In the opening match against Rachel, Jamie, having lost the first two sets very easily, took the next two but Rachel made sure of the fifth. Chris then beat Rachel’s sister Hannah in the fifth taking the last two points from 9-9 but Rebecca was no match for Emma Baker. Jamie had another five setter, this time against Hannah, winning 6, -11, 11, -12, 5 to square the match. Rachel put the Stowmarket team ahead once again beating Rebecca 3-0 but Chris was to put Chelmsford back on equal terms coming back from 2-0 down to beat Emma 3-2 and saving a match point in the fourth. Rebecca now achieved her highlight of the day, from 2-0 down more consistent returns in some long rallies enabled her to take the next three sets and justifiable applause from the watching crowd. One however felt for Hannah who had lost all of her games in the fifth set. With a confident Chris beating Emma eaily and Jamie losing just as easily to Rachel a 5-4 win had been achieved. The next round of matches will be on Saturday December 20. Results were: DIVISION 1 Stowmarket A 2 Chelmsford A 7 Wymondham 9 Framlingham Earl A 0 Framlingham Earl A 4 Stowmarket A 5 Chelmsford A 0 Wymondham 9 Wymondham 9 Stowmarket A 0 Chelmsford A 7 Framlingham Earl A 2 DIVISION 2 Stowmarket B 8 Chelmsford B 1 Framlingham Earl B 3 Stowmarket C 6 Chelmsford B 7 Framlingham Earl B 2 Stowmarket D 3 Stowmarket B 6 Stowmarbet B 8 Stowmarket C 1 Stowmarket D 4 Chelmsford B 5
