Dave Jacobs - 1945- 2006 -
Obituary by Peter Saunders A photograph of Dave is available on the Home Page of the Basildon & DTTL Web-Site Dave Jacobs had always been a very good Table Tennis player who was highly respected among his peers for his ability. Perhaps his finest achievement was winning the Essex Closed Junior Boys Singles title when his victim in the Final was none other than the mighty Chester Barnes. Dave was also one of the few players to achieve the accolade of representing Essex at Junior, Senior and Veteran level and over the years he has been an integral part of strong teams who have played in the Basildon, Southend, Chelmsford and Romford Leagues. Dave won the Basildon League Mens Singles title as recently as 2002, in a year when he was also the Basildon Veterans Singles Champion.
However, Dave is best remembered
for always being a "good sport" whether he won or lost, and he was
always the first to congratulate his opponent in defeat with a
genuine friendly hand-shake. Apart from his table tennis ability
Dave was one of the most liked players in the County for his keen
sense of humour, frequently looking for the opportunity to have a
laugh either whilst playing or after the match was
completed.
As a team mate of his for 30 years and a friend for over 40 years, you could not wish for a better person to have on your side. He made going out for an evening of Table Tennis something to look forward to. Off the table as many of you know, Dave was a Physiotherapist and if anyone was injured or needed help in any way you could telephone him at any time and he would see you as soon as he was free to do so, even outside of normal working hours. Over the past few years Dave was also a Basildon Table Tennis League Committee member, putting back something into the game he loved so much, helping out with organising the Closed Championships and helping to organise the trophies for the Presentation evening. This year he was elected Vice Chairman of the Basildon League and he was helping me to run the League. He leaves behind his loving wife Evelyn and his four daughters - Nicole, Fiona, Melanie and Tanya. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Your friend Peter Saunders
