League Chairman Richard  Hiskey salutes the two Men's Singles finalists
John Holland and  Vytas Rybakas,
together with
Anna Emtage representing the events sponsor M&G Investments
and the Mayor of Chelmsford Councillor John  Hunnable

The new Men's Singles Champion,  Vytas Rybakas - the youngest ever Chelmsford Champion - receives his trophy from the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor John Hunnable . In the final Vytas looked as if he was down and out a 0:2 down to the very experienced John Holland. But displaying maturity beyond his years Vytas clawed his way back to win in sensational style in the fifth end.

Winning any tournament once is an achievement, but winning it 13 times is nothing short of incredible!  That's what Julie Vansertima achieved when she recaptured the Ladies Singles title  from last years champion Cathhy Eakin in a dramatic final that also went to the fifth end. Julie is pictured here (right) with Cathy and in the centre Anna  Emtage of sponsors M&G Investments presents the winners trophy.

Everyone's a winner on Finals Night. At least that was the way it seemed this year. Dumped out of the Men's Singles in the semi-final by John Holland, Matthew Staines totally redeemed himself in the U21 Singles when he  completely out powered Vytas Rybakas 3 straight. vytas of course went on to win the Men's Singles! Matthew is seen here receiving his trophy from the  Mayoress Mrs Pamela Hunnable.

Maybe you have a story or pictures from Finals Night some years ago - we would love to hear from you!

Nobody was prepared to put money on John Holland not taking all 4 top Men's titles by the end of Finals Night. particularly after a crushing semi-final victory over Matt Staines in the opening match of the night.  He had already won the O50's & O'60's events at the tournament weekend and in the course of Finals Night added the O40's title seeing off the challenge of Hamish  Innes with room to spare. But it wasn't to be. John had to be content with runner-up spot in the Men's event. Not bad though for 63! John is pictured here receiving the Vets Cup from Mayor john Hunnable

Can only think that Julie is trying to be modest here! As she and partner David Cole receive the winners trophy for the Mixed Doubles from Anna Emtage of M&G Investments. Retaining the title they won last year. In the Final they beat Cathy Eakin and Ray Sutton in convincing style, Julie has won this title 6 times now with 4 different partners! Who says women aren't fickle!

Special thanks to Tournament Organiser, Referee and Finals Night Umpire Arthur Clark for all of his work to make the Chelmsford Closed Tournament such a success. And not to mention his great contributions to this site with the camera!

Frequently one of the most entertaining matches of Finals Night is the Men's Doubles and this year was no exception. And David Cole and Matthew Staines, the eventual winners, played their part in that as did their opponents Fred Dove and Keiran Lally. A match of contrasting styles ... and bats! Which David and Matthew won over 5 pulsating ends.

Another Picture Gallery from the presentations on Finals Night will follow. Watch out for the next Picture News.
