Got any old pictures to lend that we can use on the history pages of this site?

Welcome to the latest edition of Picture News.

This edition features some more pictures from the M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed  Championships held over the weekend 23 - 25 January 2004. A few more pictures are at Issue 40 (link below). Pictures courtesy of official Tournament Photographer Arthur C Clark.

One of the new faces that will appear on Finals Night is veteran campaigner Hamish Innes (Mladon). he will face John Holland for the Veterans title. having worked his way to the final with a tremendous 9,11,-9,6 win over former title holder George Reeves (Rawreth). Hamish has already faced John once, loosing in the O50's Final 9,1,7. So he will be hoping for better luck on Finals Night.

With several of the top juniors missing from the Junior Doubles the event looked fairly open. nevertheless the No.1 seeds Simon Webber (ECC) and Greg Green (Hatfield Peverel) fought their way through. In the end holding off a determined challenge from Tom Hill and Lorna Staff (ECC) to take the title 7,-9,-9,8,4.

There were quite a few upsets in the Men's Singles this year. Perhaps none more so than when the holder Keiran Lally (Maldon) almost faltered in the opening group stage having to be content to go through as group RU after being beaten by Kevin Read (Danbury) pictured here. Kevin was finally stopped in the Quarter Finals where he lost to John Holland -8,4,7,4.

At least they look determined and look like a team! Ray Sutton and Cathy Eakin (Maldon) will be making their first appearance together on Finals Night in the Mixed Doubles. They earned their place in the final with a tremendous semi-final victory over Paul Davison (ECC) and Jean Chasmer (Danbury) 5,-9,9,-11,5. Cathy will also be appearing in the Ladies Singles Final bidding to retain her title.
