Coaching Going Well

League Coaching Officer Hil Dowsett, and other coaches have been quite busy lately. A highly successful 10 week Adult Coaching course at Riverside Leisure Centre has just ended. Coaches Adrian and Ryan Pitt assisted with the course which was fully subscribed for the 12 available places. The delegates were also delighted to have several guest players coming to share their skills at various points throughout the course, including veteran England International Stuart Gibbs, first division stars Dave Bowles and Terry Dowsett, and former ladies champion Julie Vansertima. The pictures indicate just how much effort had been put in by all concerned over an excellent course.

Same people but different positions!

Hil has also recently taken a group of juniors over to the Peniel Academy at Brentwood. A similar venture took place last year, and what a difference a year makes. 9 juniors took part and whereas last year only an odd game or two was won, this year 19 out of 58 games played were won. And coach Hil was delighted with the performance. None more so than with that of 11 year old Adam Pitt winning 3 out of 5 and 14 year old Laura Pyman winning 4 out of 8 matches. It's clear that some of our juniors are making real progress.

Adam Pitt - on top form in the recent visit to the Peniel Academy

Since moving to table tennis from tennis just a year ago Laura Pyman has made tremendous improvement. Her performance at Peniel Academy showed just how much.

One of the factors that has led to the development of a number of junior players around the League has been the number of excellent initiatives in coaching. The latest has been the move to Melbourne Athletics Stadium where coaches Adrian Pitt, Neil Gooday and Ryan Pitt are leading weekly sessions on a Friday aimed at beginners and improvers. The excellent facilities at Melbourne allow play on 8 tables and with 3 qualified coaches and a number of other adult helpers the youngsters attending are receiving great table time and encouragement. For information contact Adrian or Neil.

Girls seem to be enjoying the table tennis coaching at Melbourne just as much as the boys. Great news!

Claire Austin is one of the most recent recruits and is already showing real aptitude.

Even established junior players like Haydn Upson have to share in the work at Friday coaching. Seen here collecting up the balls for the robot. One of the occasional features that adds fun to the coaching sessions
